Most home fires starts small. If detected early enough the fire can be controlled with very little water. A domestic sprinkler system operates automatically releasing water directly over the source of the fire and sounding the alarm. This minimises damage to the home as water is only released in the direct area of the fire. Domestic sprinklers also enables more open plan home designs.
